Shiatsu: An Integrative Healing Art
Shiatsu is a deeply rooted form of bodywork that blends the wisdom of Eastern and Western healing traditions. Originating in Japan, Shiatsu evolved from anma, a traditional Japanese massage often practiced by blind practitioners. Over time, it incorporated techniques such as ampuku (abdominal massage), Do-In (self-massage, breathing, and stretching practices), and acupressure, weaving together a rich tapestry of therapeutic approaches.
At the heart of Shiatsu is the meridian system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which views health as the balanced flow of ‘Ki’ (also known as ‘Chi’)—the body’s vital energy—through a network of energy pathways. Shiatsu supports this energetic flow by applying mindful, sustained pressure to specific points along these meridians, helping to release tension, restore balance, and address both physical and emotional imbalances.
What makes Shiatsu distinct is its integration of Eastern energetic theory with Western understanding of anatomy and physiology, allowing practitioners to offer holistic care that is both intuitive and informed.
The term ‘Shiatsu’ literally means ‘finger pressure’, yet sessions may also involve the use of thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, and even feet, applying pressure through the practitioner’s body weight in a grounded, connected way. Each treatment is tailored to the individual, making Shiatsu a dynamic, adaptive, and profoundly nurturing form of therapeutic touch.
